About Dalian Maritime University
Founded in 1909, Dalian Maritime University (DMU) is one of the largest and best maritime universities and is the only key maritime institution under the Ministry of Transport, China. DMU enjoys a high reputation internationally as an excellent center of maritime education and training as recognized by International Maritime Organization.
DMU has 6 Post-doctoral Research Centers, 6 Primary Discipline Doctoral Programs, 32 Subordinate Discipline Doctoral Programs, 18 Primary Discipline Master’s Programs, 97 Subordinate Discipline Master’s Programs, and 51 undergraduate programs. DMU now consists of 19 teaching and research institutions, including Navigation College, Marine Engineering College, Information Science and Technology College, Transportation and Management College, Environmental Science and Engineering College, Transportation Equipments and Ocean Engineering College, Law School, Foreign Languages College, Public Management and Humanities College, Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, etc. The current student population has risen to approximately 20000. Up to now, more than 90000 advanced professionals have been educated and trained at DMU, most of which have become the backbone of China’s shipping industry.
DMU owns buildings for maritime sciences that contain fully functional equipments and facilities. There are also maritime training and research centers, such as survival training center, harbor basin, library, swimming pool, and planetarium. DMU has a training dock and over 100 laboratories for teaching, training and research that also include a full mission ship-handling simulator and an engine room simulator. DMU also owns and operates two ocean-going training vessels.
DMU has an international vision regarding academic cooperation and exchange. Since 1979, DMU has established cooperative relations with more than 102 international renowned maritime institutions, which include those in Russia, USA, Japan, Great Britain, Korea, Australia, Sweden, Egypt and Vietnam, etc. The academic relationships with these sister universities are maintained through mutual visits, faculty staff and student exchanges, joint programs and joint research projects. In March 2005, the first joint MSc Program in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management was successfully inaugurated at DMU.
This further enhances the University’s level of international academic cooperation. The University has established long-term cooperative relationships with international organizations and institutions, including the IMO, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), Global Maritime Education and Training Association (GlobalMET), the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), Asia-Pacific Economics Cooperation (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the International Shipping Federation (ISF), the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), Baltic and International Maritime Conference (BIMCO) as well as some world famous shipping companies such as Lloyd’s Register, NYK.
The University was enrolled in the first batch of institutions under the Chinese Government Scholarship Program and began to recruit foreign students in 1955. Since 2008, DMU has provided excellent students with Liaoning Provincial Government Scholarship and Dalian Government Scholarship. Up to now, more than 4,500 foreign students and advanced professionals from over 70 countries and regions have been educated and trained at DMU.
